Enlisted Lancashire Fusiliers for commission into Lincolnshire Regiment. Wnlisted n Royal Irish Regiment

Died at Greenpoint Hospital, Cape Province, 29 July 1900; died of enteric fever and is buried in the Cape Town Maitland cemetery

Served in Boer War 1880-81; present at Laing's Nek and Ingogo; served through Egyptian Campaign 1882 ; present at actions round Alexandria, and at Tel-el-Kebir ; served with Mounted Inf. in Suakim Campaign 1884 ; present at El Teb, and relief of Tokar ; the battle of Tamed, and the affair at Tamanib (awarded the V.C. for saving the life of a private in the Sussex Regt.); Khartoum Expedition. 1884-5, in desert operations with Camel Corps; prom. to a troop in the 18th Hussars for services in Egypt 1886 ; Major 1896 ; in S. Africa 1899 -1902, including Talana, Lombard's Bop, siege of Ladysmith.

GEORGE GLADSTON MEREWETHER

1863 – 1901

Eagle House, 1874 – 1877, and Winchester

Wiltshire Imperial Yeomanry

Drowned in the Zambesi on his way to Fort James, June 1901; on Nominal Roll as number 38 and Guy not George in Imperial Yeomanry 1/1 Wiltshire company; no grave noted so could have been swept away

Died on active service at Johannesburg, 1899

Not on any database that I have found which usually means that he died prior to the war, that is, 11 October 1899

 



Major RANDOLPH EDWARD WHITEHEAD

1861 – 1902

Eagle House, 1868 – 1873, Winchester, and Royal Military College, Sandhurst

101st Regiment. Royal Munster Fusiliers

Killed in action at Doornfontein, 13 January 1902; buried in Kimberely West End cemetery
